Vancouver’s logging and fishing industries in the late 1800s and early 1900s were a major driving force behind the city’s development, but they also had severe consequences. The logging industry, in particular, led to the rapid clearcutting of ancient forests, devastating the land and the indigenous communities who relied on it. The fishing industry led to overfishing, which caused a decline in fish populations and impacted the livelihoods of local fishermen. The industries brought in a large number of immigrants, many of them Asian, who faced discrimination and racism. These industries were a double-edged sword, they brought economic growth but also caused ecological and social issues that have long-lasting impacts till today.
